Inheritance of Mutational Changes Induced by Radiation in Paramecium Aurelia.

چکیده

N a previous paper KIMBALL (1949) has described the induction by radiation I of changes in vigor in Paramecium aurelia which first expressed themselves in the exautogamous progeny of rayed animals. In that paper, it was assumed that the changes were due to mutations in the micronucleus. This paper will present the genetic evidence which bears on this assumption. The radiation studies suggested that most of the reduction in vigor after autogamy was due to the combined action of a number of mutant genes with individual effects too small to be detected rather than to genes with large effects. Thus, the phenomena of inheritance observed should be those characteristic of multiple gene inheritance.

Mutational Analysis of Mating Type Inheritance in Syngen 4 of PARAMECIUM AURELIA.

Six genic mutations restricting clones to mating type VII (O) were isolated in syngen 4, Paramecium aurelia. The only three extensively tested were neither allelic nor closely linked. A second type of mutation, allelic to one of the O restricted mutants, was also found. Clones homozygous for this mutant gene were selfers, producing both O and E (VIII) mating types, but only when they were proge...

Genetic Changes Induced by Exposure to Nitrogen Mustard and Their Inheritance I N Paramecium

N RECENT years chemical induction of mutation has assumed considerable I importance in experimental genetics, as evidenced particularly by the work of AUERBACH and ROBSON (1944, 1946, 1947a, 1947b), AUERBACH (1949a, b) and others. These workers, investigating mustard gases and related compounds found them to be potent mutagens in various organisms. One of the compounds shown by AUERBACH and ROB...

Determination and inheritance of mating type in Paramecium aurelia, syngen 5.

ATING type inheritance in Paramecium aurelia is an important example of permanent nuclear differentiation. The relevance of nuclear differentiation to the general problem of gene action and development has often been noted (e.g., see SONNEBORN 1960). Briefly, the study of mating type determination in P. aurelia (and other ciliates) has provided models of the limitation of genic potentiality and...

Dependence of the kappa particles of stock 7 of Paramecium aurelia on a single gene.

K A P P A and several other types of symbiotic particles are found in various stocks of Paramecium aurelia; their characteristics have been reviewed extensively by SONNEBORN (1959) and more recently by PREER (1967). Many of these symbiotic particles enable the paramecium containing them to kill paramecia that lack them and to be themselves resistant to the killing activity of animals containing...

Predation changes the shape of thermal performance curves for population growth rate

Ectotherms generally demonstrate nonlinear changes in performance (e.g., movement speed, individual growth, population growth) as a function of temperature that are characterized by thermal performance curves (TPC). Predation risk elicits phenotypic and behavioral changes that likewise impact performance measures. We tested whether exposure to predation Orthocyclops modestus impacts the maximum...
